First match

by Bob McEvoy

My first match was Tottenham at home on Feb 28th 1959 . We won 2-1 ,Bobby Collins got the winner but my abiding memory is someone running onto the pitch before the game started and presenting Danny Blanchflower with a box of Shredded Wheat . My dad said it was probably empty and as I was only 7 I didn't get the joke . Whilst footballers endorsing products is now commonplace in 1959 I think Blanchflower was only the 2nd footballer (Dennis Compton ;primarily a cricketer, was if memory serves the first) to advertise on TV . His catchphrase in an Ulster brogue was "Pass the hot milk"
