In October the deputation negotiated with Houlding. Conscious of Everton's increasing income he had consistently raised the rent on Anfield. The deputation tried to obtain a written commitment from him setting out the rent and the terms of Everton's lease. Houlding refused, but insisted he would charge an affordable rent.
