Richard Molyneux had been Everton's full time secretary and treasurer since 1891, but the directors had become increasingly worried about his ability to do his job. In September 1901 Kirkwood and the office boy reported to the Board "on the condition of the secretary" in the office. Molyneux defended himself, but the directors voted to suspend him - presumably for drunkeness. He was not re-instated.
