Following Dean's accident the directors altered the terms of players' contracts to exclude dangerous activities. Some may have remembered the accident suffered by a former player, William Brown, in August 1920. On 12 April 1927 the directors agreed to change the contracts, and when Ted Critchley's contract was signed on 20 April it had been added.
