On 21 March 1925 Dean made his debut for the Blues at Highbury. Everton lost 3-1 to Arsenal and Dean was particularly disheartened at having his goal disallowed. The next Saturday he scored on his first appearance at Goodison in a match against Aston Villa which Everton won 2-0. Dean recalled arriving at the match by tram along with the fans.
