Soon Dean caught the eye of the England selectors. He scored twice on his international debut on 12 February 1927 in a 3-3 draw against Wales. On his second England appearance on 2 April at Hampden Park Dean scored two goals against Scotland in a 2-1 win for England. A 23 year run of Scottish dominance over England on home soil came to an end.
