Free Talks by Peter Lupson
The next talk by acclaimed author, Peter Lupson, will be on John Houlding, George Mahon and the Battle of Anfield! (see details below).
All talks will be held at 2pm in the Hornby Room in Liverpool Central Library (next to the Everton Collection exhibition). After each talk, Peter Lupson will be signing and selling copies of his books.
Houlding, Mahon and the Battle of Anfield
Wednesday 11th November, 2-3pm
As John Houlding's grip on Everton tightened, tensions within the committee grew intolerable. They came to a head when Houlding raised the rent on the Anfield stadium to an unacceptable level. After a ferocious battle with Houlding, George Mahon led the exodus from Anfield to Goodison Park.
Reconciliation and Forgiveness — The Cuff/McKenna Friendship
Monday 7th December, 2-3pm
In an amazing gesture of forgiveness and reconciliation between the clubs, three Everton and three Liverpool players carried Houlding's coffin at his funeral in 1902. The bonds between the clubs were further deepened through the remarkable friendship of Will Cuff of Everton and John McKenna of Liverpool, two powerful figures who had been on opposite sides during the bitter split of 1892.
William McGregor and the Birth of the Football League
Wednesday 16th December, 2-3pm
Everton were founder members of the Football League in 1888 and champions three years later. Liverpool joined the Second Division in 1893 and were First Division champions in 1901. Find out how the Football League was started and meet its father, Scotsman William McGregor.
