What happened in Everton's history this week?

22 February 1937 - The FA Cup, 5th Round Replay, Everton v Tottenham: one of the greatest Everton cup-ties, despite losing 4-3 to Spurs. Tommy Lawton and Dixie Dean both scored in the first half, with Tottenham's Morrison pulling one back before half-time. Early in the second-half, Joe Mercer took a throw in which led to Dixie Dean being brought down for a penalty. However, the linesman flagged for a foul throw by Mercer and the game suddenly turned. Everton got a third, but Spurs scored 3 in the final frantic half hour. Joe Mercer claimed it to be the finest match he'd ever taken part in. Read the full match programme here.



22 February 1986 - Everton defeat Liverpool 2-0 at Anfield, with goals from Kevin Ratcliffe and Gary Lineker.



23 February 1919
- Johnny Carey is born in Dublin. Carey managed Everton from 1958 to 1961 after being famously sacked in the back of a taxi by Chairman, Sir John Moores. Read a magazine article about Carey here.

24 February 1920 - Cyril Lello is born in Ludlow. Lello made over 250 appearances for Everton between 1947 and 1956, helping them win promotion back into the First Division in 1953-54. See all Cyril Lello memorabilia here.

25 February 1928 - Dixie Dean scores hat-trick in Merseyside derby. Liverpool took the lead but, on his 100th appearance for the club, Dean scored a hat-trick within the hour in front of 56,447 at Anfield. Liverpool ended up pulling two back to draw the match, but Everton remained on top of the First Division. Read the full match programme here.

26 February 1898
- Everton reach FA Cup Semi-Final after defeating Burnley, 3-1 with two goals from Jack Taylor and one from John Bell.

27 February 1943
- Everton defeat Southport, 10-2. Tommy Lawton scored four, George Mutch two and other goals from Cook, Fowler, Stevenson and an own goal. Read the match programme here.

28 February 1931 - Everton defeat Southport 9-1 in the FA Cup Quarter-Final with Dixie Dean scoring four. His daughter was born on the same day and named Nina in recognition of the score!!
