Everton's 1909 South American Tour

In 1909 Everton and Spurs achieved a footballing first when they agreed to go on an adventurous tour to Argentina and Uruguay.

Football was becoming a popular sport in South America and officials thought that the visit of two professional English clubs would attract more fans.

It must have been an amazing trip for the young players most of whom had probably never travelled abroad before.

A first team of 11 players plus 2 reserves and 2 Everton officials, including Alfred Wade who had played for the club when it was St. Domingo's, made the journey.

The Everton F.C. minute books show how the tour almost failed to come off.  In the end a way was found for it to go ahead and the trip was a resounding success.
