What happened in Everton's History this week?

8 August 1970 - Everton beat Chelsea at Stamford Bridge to win the F.A. Charity Shield for the fourth time. Howard Kendall and Alan Whittle scored to give Everton a 2 - 1 win. See the ticket from this match.
 
9 August 1914 -
Joe Mercer was born in Ellesmere Port on this day in 1914. Mercer was involved with EFC for the majority of his playing career joining Everton as a youngster in 1932. He won a Championship medal with the club in 1939 just before the war interrupted his career. Despite the war, Mercer achieved 170 League appearances for Everton before his transfer to Arsenal in 1946. He later went on to have a successful managerial career, most notably with Manchester City. See Joe Mercer memorabilia.

10 August 1985-
Everton beat F.A. Cup winners Manchester United by 2 goals to nil in the F.A. Charity Shield at Wembley. Goals were scored by Trevor Steven and Adrian Heath in a fantastic display by Everton. The match was also the first competitive appearance of Gary Lineker for Everton. See 1985 Charity Shield memorabilia.

11 August 1981 - Manchester United feature again on this day in 1981 when the two teams were involved in a deal to swap players worth £900,000. EFC sold John Gidman to Manchester United in return for winger Mickey Thomas. Thomas failed to make an impact at Everton and after only 10 first-team appearances for the Club he was placed on the transfer list after refusing to play in a reserve match. 12 August 1995 - F.A. Cup winners Everton played Premier League Champions Blackburn Rovers in the 1995 F.A. Charity Shield in front of 40,000 fans. Everton won the game courtesy of a single goal by midfielder Vinny Samways. It was the eleventh time that Everton had played in the Charity Shield and their first since 1987. 13 August 1966 - Another famous Charity Shield appearance for Everton against rivals Liverpool. This was the first time that the two Merseyside teams had met in the Charity Shield. Over 63,000 fans packed into Goodison to see F.A. Cup winners Everton take on League Champions Liverpool. The match promised a great deal with both tems including a player from England's 1966 World Cup winning squad, Ray Wilson for Everton Roger Hunt for Liverpool. However, despite the promise, the game was a disappointment for Everton who lost to Liverpool 1-0. 

14 August 1970 - Andy King was born on this day in 1956.  King was bought by Everton in 1976 for £35,000. Popular with the fans he spent four years at Goodison before being transferred to QPR in 1980 for £450,000. See Andy King memorabilia
