August is traditionally F.A. Charity Shield month and to celebrate Everton's history of success in the competition this months 'Object of the Month' is the programme from the 1984 Charity Shield match between Everton and Liverpool at Wembley.

This was the second time that the two clubs had met in the Charity Shield, the first being in 1966 when Everton lost by one goal to nil. The only goal of the match was an own goal by Liverpool player Bruce Grobbelar which gifted the trophy to Everton. This match-day programme is particularly special as it has been signed by the squad including Alan Harper, Derek Mountfield, Kevin Ratcliffe and Trevor Steven.  1984 was also the start of EFC's most successful spell in the competition. Between 1984 and 1987 Everton played in the Charity Shield on four occassions, winning three times and sharing the trophy once.

Everton are the fourth most successful club in Charity Shield history having made eleven appearences between 1928 and 1995. They have won the trophy nine times including a shared win with Liverpool in 1986.

The Charity Shield competition began in 1908 when it was contested between the Football League First Division Champions, Manchester United and the Southern League Champions, Queens Park Rangers. The format of the competition varied over the years and was first played between the winners of the Football League and the F.A. Cup winners in 1921. In 2002 the competition was renamed the Community Shield, however the gate money raised by the match continues to be distributed to charity.
