What happened in Everton's history this week?

15 November 1895 -
Neil McBain was born in Campbeltown. McBain made 103 appearances for Everton between 1923 and 1925 but is perhaps best known for becoming the oldest player to have appeared in the Football League. In 1947, at the age of 51 years and 4 months, he was forced to select himself as emergency goalkeeper for New Brighton, where he was manager, conceding 3 goals as Hartlepool United won 3-0. See Neil McBain memorabilia.

16 November 1889 - Preston North End defeated Everton 5-1. This was the game that effectively cost Everton the League title in 1889-90, with reigning champions Preston inflicting Everton's only home defeat of the campaign. Before the game Everton were top of the table, ahead of Preston, but the pair swapped places after the game and remained in that order for the rest of the campaign. At the end of the season Preston retained the title, 2 points ahead of Everton. Read the 1889 match programme.

17 November 1984 - A 4-0 home win over a poor Stoke side ensured Everton remained on top of the First Division thanks to goals from Adrian Heath (two), Peter Reid (his first of the season) and Trevor Steven. Read the Stoke programme.

18 November 1931 - Charlie Gee won his first cap for England in the match against Wales at Anfield, England winning 3-1. Less than 12 months previously he had made his League debut for Everton. Initially he was put into the Central League team but got his chance at first-team action when called in for the injured Tommy Griffiths and made the position his own. On his international debut his opposite number for Wales was the same Tommy Griffiths! See Charlie Gee memorabilia.

19 November 1904 - Everton lost 1-0 to Sunderland. This was the only home defeat Everton suffered all season but it proved costly as they ultimately finished second in the League, just 1 point behind Newcastle United. Read the 1904 programme.

20 November 1961 - Dave Watson was born in Liverpool. He first signed for Liverpool in 1979 but was sold to Norwich City for £100,000 without having played for the first team in 1980. After helping the canaries to the League Cup in 1985 he returned to Merseyside in 1986, costing Everton £900,000. He collected a League championship medal in 1987, FA Cup winner's medal in 1995 and FA Charity Shield medals twice. In 1997 he was appointed caretaker manager following the departure of Joe Royle. See all Dave Watson memorabilia.

21 November 1914 - Bobby Parker kept on course to equal Bertie Freeman's individual goalscoring record for a single season with a hat-trick against Sunderland as Everton won 7-1 at Goodison. At the end of the season Parker had scored 36 goals, exactly the same tally Freeman had scored 6 years previously. See Bobby Parker memorabilia.
